Health & Wellness Reviews Contact Us Featured Caring for a Cold While having a cold may not be a serious medical problem it can still be very unpleasant to cope with, especially if you’re caring for a young child. While there is no cure for the problem, there are several remedies which can help you to stop feeling miserable. \r\n \r\n When you get a cold, it’s likely you’ll feel unwell for at least a week and maybe longer. Although getting a lot of rest will help, there is some debate over what else you can do to help yourself. Colds are extremely common and therefore it’s no surprise that there are numerous pieces of advice about how you can treat yourself.

\n\n \r\n Although some advertised cold remedies are totally ineffectual, there are others which have been shown to work in relieving the discomfort associated with a runny nose, a cough and just feeling generally unwell. Here, we look at some of the cold remedies that can help you. \r\n \r\n Stay hydrated – drink plenty of juice, water, warm water with lemon and honey and clear broth as this will help to prevent you from becoming dehydrated and will help to loosen any congestion. Stay away from coffee and caffeinated drinks as they will worsen dehydration.\n\n

\n\nGet lots of rest to heal your body \r\n Gargle with salt water to soothe your sore throat \r\n Try throat lozenges and sprays or ice chips to relieve the pain of a sore throat \r\n Use an over-the-counter nasal spray or drops to relieve congestion\n\n

\n\nFor adults and children over 6 months you can give acetaminophen or ibuprofen in suitable amounts to suit the age of the patient.

Avoid aspirin in children as it can cause Reye’s Syndrome.\n\n

\n\nTake warm liquids like tea or chicken soup to ease congestion \r\n Use a humidifier to add more moisture to the atmosphere in your room and loosen your congestion \r\n Use an over the counter cough and cold medicine if you are an adult or older child\n\n\r\n Remember to take cold remedies only as the packaging directs and ensure you don’t accidentally take too much medication by combining different treatments. \r\n \r\n Remedies That Won’t Work \r\n \r\n There are numerous cold remedies which have been shown time and again to be ineffective.\n\nSome of these include: \r\n \r\n Antibiotics – although these will attack bacteria they cannot help combat a virus and since colds are viral they are totally ineffective. Antibiotics will not only fail to help you to feel better but could also result in the exacerbated problem of bacteria which is resistant to antibiotics\n\nGiving over the counter medications for coughs and colds to young children.

These could be dangerous and even life-threatening for infants and children under the age of 6 because of their severe side effects so always avoid giving these kinds of treatments to your youngsters. \r\n \r\n If in doubt about which treatment to give yourself or your child or you are worried about any symptoms that you are experiencing, visit your physician and ask for their professional advice. Ray O\'Neal Posted on September 20, 2017September 21, 2017 Categories Uncategorized Caring For A Sprain An ankle sprain is one of the most common types of injury. Most people will have experienced one, either incurred during play when they were a child or by stumbling on some uneven surface when an adult. Around 25,000 people are injured in this way every single day.\n\nA sprain can be very mild – just a moment of pain – but it could be a lot more severe causing the ankle to swell and be painful when you try to stand. Anyone experiencing a bad sprain may even feel a popping sensation at the moment the injury took place.

\n\nThe term “sprained ankle” just means that the outer ankle’s ligaments (either one or two) have been stretched or torn. Without proper treatment, a sprain can cause a long term problem. More often than not, the ankle rolls inward which leads to an inversion sprain, or rolls outward with the medical term for this being “eversion sprain”. An inversion sprain results in pain to the ankle’s outer side and this is the type which most commonly occurs. If you experience pain on the inner part of your ankle, this could be more serious due to tendon injuries or damage to the ligament which supports the arch, so this type of injury should be treated by a professional.

\n\nThe most likely conditions for a sprained ankle occur when your toes are on the surface and your heel is up in the air. Being in this position causes tension to the ligaments in the ankle making them more vulnerable. If your foot is in this position while experiencing a sudden force, the ankle may turn inward, hurting the ligaments.\n\nIt can sometimes be hard to determine whether an ankle has been sprained or broken without having an x-ray. Anyone who experiences difficulty in bearing their weight with this type of injury, or who experiences deformity or swelling should always seek advice from their doctor.

\n\nThe doctor will need to know what precisely you were doing at the time of the sprain. They will examine your ankle and may need to perform an x-ray to determine whether or not any bones have been broken. The majority of ankle sprains will be treated without surgery, and a minor sprain will be best treated by undergoing a program of functional rehabilitation.\n\nHow To Treat The Sprained Ankle\n\nIf you ensure a sprained ankle receives proper treatment, you can avoid the problem of instability and chronic pain. If you have a mild sprain (grade 1) here is some advice:\n\n Rest the ankle by avoiding walking and weight bearing.

If necessary, use crutches. Ankle braces may help to control any swelling while adding stability as the ligaments heal. Avoid strenuous activities or household tasks such as using a hardwood floor vacuum. Apply ace to prevent swelling. Never put ice on your skin directly – always put a pillowcase or other thin bit of cloth between your skin and the ice pack).

Never leave ice on for longer than 20 minutes as you could get frostbite. Compressing the injury will help to prevent swelling and will give your additional support. Elevating your foot by propping it up will help to reduce swelling.\n\nIf you have a more serious grade 2 sprain, follow the same advice but give it longer to heal. You may need a doctor to apply a splint.

\n\nIf you experience a grade 3 sprain, you may end up with a permanently unstable ankle. In rare cases, you may need surgery or a leg cast.\n\nHow To Rehabilitate A Sprained Ankle\n\nWithout rehabilitation, the sprain may not properly heal and further injury may occur. Three phases are required to help rehabilitate your injury. Phase 1 – rest, protect and reduce swelling Phase 2 – restore flexibility, strength and motion range Phase 3 – return gradually to maintenance exercise and then introduce more advanced sports Read more.

.. Ray O\'Neal Posted on September 24, 2017May 30, 2018 Categories Uncategorized Clean Floors are a Must Hygiene is important anywhere, but in a healthcare facility, cleanliness is more important than ever. Apart from the fact that patients want to see a clean and tidy environment, the need to keep grime and the bacteria it contains away from vulnerable and ill people is key. \r\n \r\n Like most hospitals, ours has lots of tiled and wood floors throughout the corridors, wards, private rooms and public spaces, and keeping them spotless is vital.

Our old vacuum cleaners were starting to wear out and weren’t getting the job done properly, which meant a lot of extra work for our cleaning crews who had to work twice as hard to make sure that hygiene standards were met in all of our rooms. \r\n \r\n It was time to choose a new product, however finding the right vacuum cleaner that could do a great job in such a sensitive environment as a hospital wasn’t as easy as it may seem. A vacuum cleaner which would be perfectly good for a private home or even for another type of commercial facility just wouldn’t be up to scratch in an environment like a hospital where optimal cleanliness is paramount. \r\n \r\n First of all, we had to consider what we were looking for in our vacuum cleaner. First of all, it would need to be a commercial machine designed for use in a professional, heavy duty environment.

It would need to withstand rigorous daily use without breaking down quickly and would also need to be able to cope with all kinds of debris and dirt on a range of different surfaces. Why take a look at the best car vacuum brands when what you need for the hospital are commercial vacuum types? \r\n \r\n While many vacuums are designed predominantly for cleaning carpeted areas, in the hospital most of our floors are tile or wood, and therefore a model which was suitable for use on hard floors was essential. We needed a model which would guarantee a thorough clean whilst also not being too heavy to maneuver and being user-friendly for the cleaner operatives to use. \r\n \r\n As the vacuum will be used in a hospital, noise levels were also important to consider. We didn’t want to choose a model which would produce excessive noise which would disturb the patients.

\n\nOf course, since hospitals have stairs, considering the best rated vacuums for stairs is also a must!\r\n \r\n After spending some time weighing up the pros and cons of our shortlist of vacuum cleaner models, we decided that it came down to the following two machines: \r\n \r\n Hoover Commercial Hush Tone Canister Vacuum CH32008\n\n\r\n Hoover is a name that equates to quality in the vacuum industry, and therefore this model is already appealing before you even take into account its excellent features. Lightweight and easy to maneuver, this model has a large capacity as well as HEPA filtration for better air quality. Its canister design makes it easy to move around thanks to its integrated wheels. \r\n \r\n Pros\n\n\r\n Affordable price tag \r\n 9 liter canister capacity \r\n Integrated wheels for easy maneuverability \r\n Ideal for cleaning large scale debris and wide open spaces \r\n HEPA filtration for excellent air quality and reduced allergens \r\n Large 16” head to cover more ground \r\n 50 foot cord is long enough to clean wards and larger public spaces without stopping \r\n \r\n Cons \r\n \r\n Wheeled unit can be noisy on hardwood floors \r\n \r\n Oreck 8 Pound Commercial Upright Vacuum Model XL2100RHS\n\n\r\n This lightweight upright model is extremely easy to maneuver and requires very little effort to move around even long corridors. Well designed, robustly constructed and incredibly reliable, it is a strong and durable machine that is perfect for commercial use and is incredibly user friendly.

\r\n \r\n Pros\r\n \r\n Fresh scent tabs can be purchased for this product to improve air quality \r\n Vacuum filters air effectively \r\n Comes equipped with a spare belt \r\n Very lightweight at just 8 lbs so easy to maneuver \r\n Simple to use operation \r\n Strong and reliable construction \r\n Perfect for large expanses of open floor \r\n \r\n Cons \r\n \r\n Vacuum head level cannot be adjusted \r\n Doesn’t come equipped with a hose \r\n \r\n In the end, after much debate, we opted for the Hoover model. The high quality brand name, excellent construction and convenient wheeled design persuaded us that it was the right choice for our hospital. Now, our tiled and wooden floors will be spotlessly clean with minimal effort for our cleaning operatives. \r\n Read more..
